Welcome to my 1st blog post - I had to do one because I wrote too much for instagram!
Anyway, this is a subject close to my heart....
How Audible Helped Me Tackle Dyslexia and get in the book gang!
I do, I feel like I've joined the book gang!!
As a dyslexic photographer, I never thought I would be able to reconnect with books. who knew that Audible would help me do just that. Audible has opened up a huge world to me and changed my reading experience, I can now experience books that I would otherwise be unable to read. There is lots of technology that totally baffles me and some of it freaks me out in a Disney’s WallE kind of way - but I know in so many ways things have to move forward, right now the best thing to have come out of the app world is basically someone reading to me, how can something so simple be so amazing? It has revolutionised my life!
Why I Stopped Reading
For more years than I can remember, I have tried and tried to read. Every time feeling deflated when it took me so long to read just one book. Sometimes over a year to read. With the undercurrent feeling of failing, I know this sounds dramatic but it really is how it made me feel. I'm not sure when I stopped, but I did, and I did feel so envious of the book club people (just imagine reading a book in a month or even a week). It was before I understood we are all different learners, and unsurprisingly I am an audible learner! Retaining the information is another story though!!
How Audible Helped Me Not Allow My Dyslexia To Dictate!
Wow we've gone quite deep quite quickly but, I'm sure so many of you will understand how the inability to read easily prevents you from doing many things like reading information, magazines, and newspaper articles. When you're asked to fill in a form especially if there's a queue behind you - oh the dread and little demon voice, Gerard - (Thanks Bryony Gordon for the inspiration, you're right, he has less control now I've named him)! Telling me to hurry up and that you're slowing EVERYONE down, thus causing anxiety in the simplest of tasks.
The Benefits of Listening to Books
I know this is a very personal thing, my husband can not listen to books and needs to read (unless he just says that when he's not listening to me)!! I listen whenever I am in the car or going for a walk, pottering around the house, or cleaning. I am conscious though that we do need some quiet time for open thinking instead of being constantly stimulated. The inspiration I get from the books and podcasts is so invaluable and inspiring. And I'm assuming I must be listening to far more than if I had to sit still every time I wanted to read. ADHD - but that's another story!
How Audible Has Changed My Life!
So I think it's safe to say that Audible has actually changed my life! I really believe I am now able to understand so many conversations that I've missed out on for years because of my blinkered learning ability. From escapism to knowledge it's all available and I feel so grateful to be aware of how I can access all of these things. Thank you universe and my fellow audio gang for showing me the way.
Here’s some of the light reading from the @clubstudioltd and also me enjoying audible multiple times :-)
